I met Boomie in the midst of a very difficult period at work. She gave me a lifeline, actionable advice and support to make things better. But most importantly she empowered me and reminded me frequently that I could solve the problems and that I already possessed a lot of skills I needed to solve them. I requested coaching from Boomie when I was a mid-level engineer. I wanted to create a clear, actionable framework for my growth as a developer to help me build technical depth, strengthen communication and leadership skills, and really better understand what it truly means to be a senior developer.
The sessions I had with Boomie were impactful because we were able to lay out the facts of my thinking and come up with a framework that tackles my immediate needs. Partway through the sessions, I was offered a senior level role, and we were able to shift towards both devising a plan and refining my framework to focus on tackling the new work environment while ramping up on applicable tech in a prioritized order. This was part of the most beneficial aspects of our sessions, along with the consistent transparency from our shared experiences.
The main shift in my thinking occurred after marinating in the question of what it truly means to be a senior developer. The question had been answered many different ways by many different people, but it finally sank in and really helped me reframe my mind and expectations of myself.

8 years ago I was at a crossroad in terms of which technical path to take in my software engineering career. Boomie was my manager and mentor from the time I was a junior software engineer until right before I was promoted to senior software engineer. There are many things that set Boomie apart, but in my case, it was particularly helpful to have her combination of technical knowledge, hands-on experience from her own career, and empathy.
I can’t recall a meeting with Boomie that didn’t begin with a genuine discussion of my personal well-being. In my opinion, putting this sort of personal discussion first both in the meeting agenda and in priority meant that everything that followed carried a connection to my humanity.
As a newly-promoted mid-level developer, this kind of leadership helped me navigate a job that was otherwise consistently causing me anxiety.
